History
Federated since 1960 the Cupertino Federated Women's Club has been serving the Cupertino Community for over 44 years.
The Cupertino Federated women's Club was formed in 1959 when 14 local women met to organize the group, and chose Mrs. Nick Lazaneo as their first president. Of those 14 charter members, Mrs. Winnie Mardesich, who was the first Auditor of the Club, is still an active member. Another of today's active member, Mrs. Mary Marchese, joined the Club at its first formal meeting in 1960.
The Cupertino club was officially accepted by the Executive Board of the California Federation of Women's Clubs in March of 1960.
The purpose of the Club, then and now, is to promote fellowship, self improvement, and work for the community... with both active participation and charitable donations.
Today the Club has 75 members who range in age from the 40's to 80's. Just as there is no limitation on age, there is also no restriction on where a member lives. It is not necessary to be a Cupertino resident.
At one of the Club’s first meetings in 1960, the Cupertino mayor spoke, suggesting that for the Club's first project they could help with the Cupertino Youth Center which, at that time, was run by the City. The mayor also gave a brief sketch of Cupertino's growth,
"grown now to approximately 3500 residents, and boasting a water works, sanitary sewer system and storm drainage."
In the early years, in addition to helping the Youth Center, the members helped furnish the local branch of the County Library, made monthly visits to Agnews with parties and gifts, supported Friends Outside, and Hope for the Retarded, worked at and donated to the USO (donations included a piano), helped with the Clothes Closet.. .a forerunner of Cupertino Community Services, served as hostesses for the first Cupertino Art exhibit in 1962 and for the opening of Palo Alto savings in 1963. The Bank gave them $500 for doing this and they used the money for Hope. They provided high school scholarships and camperships for the Crippled Children's Camp, and were active in the Cupertino Pioneer Day Celebration.
In 1964 Club members worked with the Cupertino Historical Society to secure a State Historical Landmark to commemorate the 1776 encampment to the DeAnza party, near the present site of Monta Vista High School.
To raise money for their projects, members held bridge luncheons, rummage sales, boutiques, and fashion shows. The first really big fashion show was held in 1965 at Lou's Village. Over 350 guests attended and the price was $3.75 a ticket. To have enough money for their first High School scholarships, the women compiled and sold 500 cook books.
In 1969 the Club donated $500 for the preservation and restoration of the Trianon on De Anza Campus.
Today the Club meets the second Wednesday of the month, September through June, each time at a different restaurant. Fund raisers include a No Bake Sale, a Game Day in February, and a Fashion Show in April. Tournaments of Tile Rummy also generate funds for charity.
Cupertino Women's Club donates several thousand dollars each year to philanthropic and educational needs, and members volunteer thousands of hours of community service.
In 1971 club members served as hostesses for the opening of Cupertino's new Library, and in April 1988 members once again had this honor for the dedication of the Library's newly expanded facilities.
We are truly dedicated to Community Service, but we haven't forgotten the Club's other original goals of fellowship and self improvement. Our social events include a day at the Races, the President’s Ball, Mystery trips. Theatre Parties and a June Barbecue. We also find fellowship in all our Club activities from working at Very Special Arts and the student Art Contest, to sharing reading experiences in the Literary group, to going out to lunch with the Gourmet Group, playing Bridge and Tile Rummy, to singing with ,the Cordettes at Convalescent homes. And we receive self-improvement through the messages of our guest speakers and club chairmen at our monthly meetings, Cupertino Federated Women's Club has something for everyone. A person can be involved in many activities or just go the monthly meetings.
Each member finds her own level of club involvement and satisfaction.
WE are a service Club, but also have fun together.
Gourmet Section meets the 3rd Wednesday of Months October, December, February, April & June.
The Tile Rummy Section meets the 1st Wednesdays of Months September to June at 10:00 AM.
